The new Miss Hong Kong 2010 is Toby Chan, 22. She won the title last night in a glittering gala competition. A dark horse in the run up to the final, she won over several early favorites.

IN THE MOOD FOR MAGGIE CHEUNG

If you've only seen Maggie Cheung competing as Miss Hong Kong in Miss World 1983, you haven't seen Maggie Cheung. Going from 1st runner-up and Miss Photogenic at Miss Hong Kong 1983 to making the semi-finals at Miss World 1983, she has become a major award-winning actor. In fact, she is the first Asian to win the highly coveted Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.

According to Wikipedia, she was born in Hong Kong, but spent part of her childhood and adolescence in the UK. She returned to Hong Kong in 1982 for vacation, but ended up staying for modeling assignments and also worked as a salesperson at a department store before entering the Miss Hong Kong pageant and embarking on a life-changing experience.

The Maggie Cheung Film Festival will kick-off today at the Amparo Muñoz Performing Arts Center with screenings of In the Mood for Love (all photos above from this incredible movie), Clean, and Center Stage.

Following the screening of In the Mood for Love, Prof. Scribner will deliver a lecture on "Best Actresses in the World," exploring why former Miss World contestants, such as Maggie Cheung and Halle Berry, have won international acting awards, whereas former Miss Universe contestants have won zip/zero/nada/nothing.

Controversial Miss Hong Kong 2008 winner Edelweiss Cheung attended another prizegiving ceremony today, together with runners-up Skye Chan and Sire Ma and Trendy Vision award winner Hilda Leung. The ladies also helped to open the new branch of the sponsor's optical shop.

Since winning the title, further reports that have broken that Edelweiss is good friends with the elder sister of Mr Ronnie Wong JP, who was a member of the contest's judging panel, fuelling the rumours that the results were fixed. Asked to confirm her relationship with Ms Wong, Edelweiss said that she only knew her because they were neighbours when she was younger and that they had not met up for over a decade. She added that she did not know Mr Wong at all.

Asked if she was unhappy about all the speculation about the contest result, Edelweiss replied that she is now getting used to the comments about her win being a surprise or a fix and she will not let this affect her carrying out her duties as Miss Hong Kong.

PIRATES OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

Angela Yiu & Edelweiss Cheung Are 'Best Pirates'

The twelve Miss Hong Kong finalists took part in a pirate-themed fashion show parade on board The Enchantment of the Seas cruise liner on Friday evening. They showed off their outfits as they introduced the sights and sounds of Hong Kong to over a hundred guests in the audience.

The captain and his guests then voted for their favourite pirate and Number 3 Edelweiss Cheung was selected as the audience's favourite, whilst Number 8 Angela Yiu was chosen by the ship's captain.

During the performance, the ladies used props to introduce features of Hong Kong life and overseas student Edelweiss was among the better performers with her strong grasp of English. Others who did well included the overseas recruitment candidate Number 7 Hilda Leung and Masters graduate Number 5 Jovy Leung. Hilda used a glowstick to represent the speed of eating, walking and working in Hong Kong and raised much applause from the crowd.

Contest favourite Number 4 Samantha Ko did not do so well in her presentation that introduced the market in Ladies Street. She was extremely nervous and spoke in broken English. She admitted that she had changed her script beforehand to compensate for her poor language skills, so this made it flow less well. However, she added that she will continue to learn and improve.

Angela did some thorough preparation with her new year sweet box, but it was probably her figure and s-shaped pose more than her speech that won the skipper over. Asked if she felt that she was exaggerating her poses too much, she replied that she has been a professional model for eight years now so she knows how she should strike a pose. She added that the girls often share advice with each other so she is not afraid of any misunderstanding.

Edelweiss commented later that she was extremely nervous on stage and had to take deep breaths to calm herself down.

As the build up to the contest finals continues, TVB have now published the contestant profiles on their website and a number of fansites have also followed supporting their favourite beauties.
