If you've only seen Maggie Cheung competing as Miss Hong Kong in Miss World 1983, you haven't seen Maggie Cheung. Going from 1st runner-up and Miss Photogenic at Miss Hong Kong 1983 to making the semi-finals at Miss World 1983, she has become a major award-winning actor. In fact, she is the first Asian to win the highly coveted Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
According to Wikipedia, she was born in Hong Kong, but spent part of her childhood and adolescence in the UK. She returned to Hong Kong in 1982 for vacation, but ended up staying for modeling assignments and also worked as a salesperson at a department store before entering the Miss Hong Kong pageant and embarking on a life-changing experience.
The Maggie Cheung Film Festival will kick-off today at the Amparo Muñoz Performing Arts Center with screenings of In the Mood for Love (all photos above from this incredible movie), Clean, and Center Stage.
