

The nation of Bhutan is known for coining the term Gross National Happiness (GNH) and the
Happy Planet Index (HPI) makes it official - Bhutan ranks #13 out of 178 countries included in the HPI (the USA is ranked at #150; #1 is Vanuatu). The very first Miss Bhutan, to be elected this year, will be charged with promoting Gross National Happiness. She will also be Bhutan's beauty delegate to Miss Earth 2008.

THIMPHU: To provide young Bhutanese women the same kind of opportunities as women in other parts of the world, in terms of cross-cultural experiences, Bhutan will organise a Miss Bhutan beauty pageant contest.
The first of its kind to be held in the country’s history, the pageant plans to promote the unique concept of Gross National Happiness to the world. Organisers says that Miss Bhutan’s slogan will be “Beauties in pursuit of Gross National Happiness”.
“I’ve always wanted to do something different and I feel, as a citizen, this is a perfect tool to promote GNH,” said organiser, Karma Tshering.
Under the banner of his company, MPC Bhutan entertainment, Karma Tshering said that his team, comprising of 17 persons, is yet to decide on the minimum qualification required for participants. Team members consist of film industry fraternity, NWAB and RENEW.
Registration opens from April 17 to May 10. Only those between 17 and 28 years, unmarried and without child, are eligible to participate.
