REAL BEAUTY WITH A REAL PURPOSE

There are 2 landmines in Angola for every person, and the landmines continue to kill and maim (Angola is slowly recovering from a 20-year old civil war, which ended just 8 years ago). To raise awareness of the plight of landmine survivors, Miss Landmine Angola 2008 was held on Wednesday night in Angola's capital, Luanda. 18 women competed in swimsuits and evening gowns during the televised pageant, and they all wore wore artificial limbs.

The winner was Augusta Urica, 31, a survivor of a landmine that claimed a portion of her leg. Urica, who is unemployed and represented Luanda in the pageant, also won US $1,000 and a motorbike.

Angola's Minister for Family Affairs, Candida Celeste, said the event would help people left disabled by the war to regain their self-esteem. There are around 80,000 amputees in Angola, most of them victims of landmines. Source: FOX News
