Rising to the Chrysanthemum Throne of Beauty is Hiroko Mima, a 22-year-old student from Tokushima, in southern Japan, about an hour away from Tokyo by plane. In addition to excelling at the high jump, Hiro is also a devotee of the traditional Awa Odori folk dance performed during the Obon season (July and August) to honor the departed spirits of one's ancestors. In modern-day Japan, this 500 year-old Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday and street parades of Awa Odori dances. Maybe Hiro will show her fellow Miss Universe 2008 beauty delegates how to perform the Awa Odori?
