The Hollywood Canteen was a World War II era club in Hollywood offering food, dancing and entertainment for U.S. and allied armed services personnel. To get into the Canteen, you needed a ticket - your uniform. Everything at the Canteen was free of charge, and the Canteen was operated and staffed by Hollywood stars and others in the entertainment industry. During that same era, USO tours began, with Hollywood celebrities, music stars, and beauty queens visiting U.S. and allied troops overseas.
The most recent beauty queen continuing the tradition is Rachel Smith, Miss USA 2007. She has done several USO tours, including the 2007 USO Holiday Tour, where she not only hobnobbed with troops, but also with Robin Williams!

In the 1960's, Miss World was on the A-list of stars that Bob Hope included in his Annual USO Holiday Tour. The tour was taped and televised in the US. Here's a newspaper ad for the television special of 1969 Holiday Tour, which featured Miss World 1969, Austria's Eva Ruber-Staier.
