QUEEN FOR A DAY

In the 1950's there was this really cheesy television show called "Queen for Day," featuring down on their luck ladies telling tales of woe. How they couldn't pay the bills or afford to buy appliances. Their fate at winning the title and prizes was left to the audience, whose applause registered on the applause meter, would determine who would win the crown and the prizes, which were usually a washing machine or an oven. We now take note of an international "Queen for a Day," Miss World 1980, Gabriella Blum of Germany who lasted less than 24 hours. Under the misguided guidance of her Svengali boyfriend, she gave up her title and was replaced by her runner-up, Miss Guam, Kimberly Santos.
