MISS RHEINGOLD-A THIRST FOR BEAUTY

From 1940 to 1965, the greater New York metropolitan area took part in selecting a new Miss Rheingold every August. Rheingold was a local brewery that used lovely young ladies to be their spokesperson/model for the advertising campaign. The first Miss Rheingold, selected by the company, was Chilean actress/model Jinx Falkenburg.

Two years later they would open the voting for a new Miss Rheingold to the public. Every store that sold beer posted pictures of the finalists for the title in their shops and anyone could vote early and as often as they liked. The finalists for the title were selected at an open audition at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Some noted personalites got their start at the Miss Rheingold contest, such as Tippi Hedren, Hope Lange, and even Grace Kelly. The contest was so popular that by 1952 , 25 million votes were cast to select that year'ss winner. Some of those votes were cast by Dean Di Maggio who is old enough to have taken part in all this. The contest ended in 1965. But everyone who lived in the greater New York area can still sing the contest's jingle "...My beer is Rheingold the dry beer, ask for Rheingold whenever you buy beer..."
