YOUNG REPUBLICAN

On September 12, 1964, Vonda Kay Van Dyke of Arizona was named Miss America 1965. Vonda Kay, a young Republican who supported Republican candidate Barry Goldwater of Arizona over the incumbent U.S. President, Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson, in the 1964 U.S. Presidential Election, was also named Miss Congeniality by her fellow Miss America contestants, a prize that came with US $1,000 in scholarship money. Crowned before a live audience of 17,467 people, Vonda Kay won a $10,000 college scholarship as the new Miss America. First runner-up was blonde Karen Carlson of Arkansas.
