2008 is a significant year for both Brazil and Japan. 100 years ago, on June 18, 1908, the ship Kasato Maru sailed from Kobe, Japan to Santos, Brazil, bringing 165 families from the Floating World to the New World in search of work opportunities. It was the beginning of a great wave of Japanese immigration to Brazil. Between 191o and 1914 alone, over 14,000 Japanese immigrated to Brazil. Today, thanks to this great wave, Brazil has the largest population of citizens of Japanese heritage outside of Japan.

Among the many events that will mark the 100-year old nipo-brasileiro bond of friendship and culture was "Brazil Fashion Now 2008," held in Tokyo last month. Both Riyo Mori, Miss Universe 2007, and her first runner-up, Brazil's Natalia Guimarães, attended the fashion event.

The Kasato Maru - maybe relatives of Riyo were on the ship?
